To provide comprehensive services, while raising awareness through community involvement and outreach initiatives, to fully address the socioeconomic disparities and community trauma that alters the lives of families affected by incarceration.

Vision

Families with an incarcerated loved one will display resiliency, hope and optimism through their capacity to thrive and overcome institutional barriers and system biases that do not support family stability.

History

The Az Hakim Foundation was established in 2001 by Az-Zahir Hakim, former Wide Receiver for the Super Bowl Champion St. Louis Rams. Az Hakim’s inspiration for starting the Az Hakim foundation comes from his personal experiences of having an incarcerated parent. He began the foundation to make a positive difference in children whose lives have been affected by an incarcerated family member. The organization provides children with the tools necessary to grow into confident, caring, and courageous individuals. The foundation accomplishes this through various enrichment programs, youth events, and youth outings. Az Hakim’s goal is to open the eyes of youth and allow them to see that there is a brighter tomorrow through making better decisions.

The Hakim Family

In the fall of 1997 Abdul Hakim Sr. was arrested. At this time, the two oldest children of the Hakim family were in college and the two younger children were in grade school. In 1998, Az-Zahir Hakim was drafted to the St. Louis Rams. It wasn’t long before Az-Zahir Hakim and Abdul Hakim Jr. stepped in for their father and supported their younger siblings (Sakeenah & Saalim) emotionally and financially. It was this unfortunate change in family dynamics that led the bond between siblings to grow stronger. Due to family support, friends, and a challenging environment this family decided that they would not follow the decisions made by their father or other surrounding individuals, nor would they blame anyone for their hardship. These are only some of the reasons why the Hakim family believes in reaching out to children with incarcerated parents because they know what it is like to lose an important figure in your life, deal with the struggles of family conflicts and financial strain, and the pressures of giving up when trying to make it seems too hard.
